Nupur Nishith

Nupur Nishith is a USA-based, award-winning artist celebrated for her work in Mithila/Madhubani painting, the centuries-old folk art of her birthplace in India. Trained from an early age under her mother’s guidance, she has developed a practice that bridges heritage and contemporary expression, bringing this traditional art form to global audiences.

Her multidisciplinary practice encompasses a range of materials, including paper, canvas, clay, ceramics, glass, wood, aluminum, large-scale murals, and digital media. A pioneer in modernizing Mithila art, she fuses traditional motifs and symbolic narratives with contemporary themes and tools, creating works of cultural depth and global resonance.

Her work, “Dheeya (The Girl Child), ” was recognized at the juried show “Color” by the BWAC, NY (2016), selected by a MoMA curator. Her murals and installations have been commissioned by Abigail Disney while Animodules have been exhibited and auctioned at the Nassau County Museum of Art, NY.

Her hand-painted piano for Sing for Hope became a cultural landmark, displayed at Central Park, Liberty Plaza, and the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Recent honors include the International Juried Show at the Center for Contemporary Art, NJ, and Honorable Mentions at the artshow alongside Smithsonian traveling exhibition at Monmouth Museum (2025) and Watchung Art Center, NJ.

A trailblazer in digital Mithila art, Nupur is also a cultural advocate, mentor, curator, and founder of Creative Mithila LLC, advancing Mithila painting as a living, global tradition.
