This year’s weekend-long 2024 Juneteenth celebration will honor Dr. Opal Lee, known as “the grandmother,” of the Juneteenth movement. Enjoy giveaways, food, and educational activities at the Edison Job Corps Center, 500 Plainfield Avenue.

Dr. Opal Lee is a longtime activist who played a pivotal role in Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday. Now a retired teacher, her dedication to education spans over 20 years and Dr. Lee’s activism has earned her respect and admiration from many across the country including President Joe Biden who awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom earlier this year.

On Saturday, June 8th, history will be made when Dr. Lee visits New Jersey for the very first time!

Celebrate this monumental movement by joining us in activities like pictures with beloved characters, pony rides, live performances, a 4-on-4 basketball tournament, voter registration, health screenings, and more!
