Between 1762 and 1764, the East New Jersey Proprietors paid to have the Proprietary House in Perth Amboy built as the governor’s residence; yet ordinary colonists built it, and how they did so has never been told before.
The East New Jersey Proprietors sponsored the construction of “Proprietary House” to serve as the official residence of New Jersey governors, but it was a small army of building tradesmen, suppliers, and construction laborers from New Jersey and New York City who built it. The irony of this fact did not hit the Proprietors until 1776, when they lost both control of the colony they had long sought and the use of Proprietary House itself, which soon became their largest stranded investment.
A one-hour lecture, plus Q & A, detailing the construction of Proprietary House in 1762-64, and its meaning for 1776 and the American Revolution. Based on amazing original documentation never brought together before, the story of its construction can now be told for the first time.
